01Women's rectangles · 11 pairs and packs
A 52 by 42 mm polarized lens in a 139 mm polycarbonate frame with metal hinges and a 138 mm arm, in tortoise, gradient brown, clear and matte black, one pair or three to a pack.

02What decides it
A 52 mm retro rectangle in polycarbonate with gradient and mirrored polarized lenses, in tortoise, gradient brown, clear and matte black, singly or three to a pack.
The lens on this frame is 42 mm tall, and that number is the whole point of the shape. A shallow lens leaves the sky to leak in over the top edge when you drive; this one comes up to the brow, so what you see through the windscreen at four in the afternoon is the road and not a white band above it. The gradient brown lens is darker at the top for the same reason: the sky is where the brightness is, the dashboard is not.
Sizing is the honest note on this shelf. At 139 mm across with a 16 mm bridge, this is a medium frame, and one reviewer with a wider face found it too small and said so; we quote her below rather than pretend otherwise. Read the frame width off a pair that already fits you before you choose. The three-packs pair a matte black with a gradient brown and a tortoise or a pink mirror for $15.99, which is $5.33 a pair, and three colourways is how most people end up with one that suits a given coat.
UV400 on a lens means the lens is rated to stop ultraviolet light up to a wavelength of 400 nanometres, which covers UVA and UVB, the two bands that reach the ground. That rating is the whole of what a sunglass lens does about the sun; polarization is a separate property that cuts reflected glare and, in the words of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, provides no UV protection on its own. The academy also says a darker lens is not a safer lens and that the sun's rays pass through haze and cloud, so the number to read on any pair, ours included, is the UV rating rather than the tint. A pair of sunglasses is not treatment for any eye condition, and light sensitivity that arrived suddenly is a question for an optometrist or ophthalmologist, not for a lens.
Every sentence in this note about the eye comes from a named public source. All of them, with the date we read them, are on our updates page.

03Asked on this shelf
The three things people ask us about women's rectangles before they choose a pair.
Check the number first: 139 mm across the frame on a 16 mm bridge is a medium, and one reviewer with an average-to-wide face found it small and gave hers away. Hold a ruler across your temples in a mirror; if you read more than 140 mm, this is not your frame, and we would rather say so here than on a return.
Most of this shelf is gradient brown, darker at the top of the lens where the sky is and lighter at the bottom where the dashboard is. Brown warms the view and lifts contrast on a road; grey keeps colour exact. If you want grey in this shape, the orange tortoise frame carries a grey lens, and the clear frame carries a pink mirror.
Three of the same 52 mm frame in three finishes: a matte black with a gradient brown and a tortoise, or with a clear frame and a pink mirror. $15.99 for the three, which is $5.33 a pair, and the point of three is that one of them suits the coat you are wearing that day.
