Editorial Policy

Every sentence on this site is ours, about our own range, and it comes from two kinds of material and nothing else: the figures we hold on each frame, and the published guidance of named public bodies where a sentence touches the eye.

Figures

Lens width and height, frame width, temple length, bridge width, material, pack count, price. Each comes from our product data, and when a figure is not there the card does without it rather than estimating.

Claims about the eye

UV400 and polarization are properties of a lens, and we print them as such. Anything beyond that, what ultraviolet light does over a lifetime, what a polarized lens does to a dashboard, whether the blue light from a screen does anything at all, is said in the words of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Optometric Association, the CDC or the FDA, with a link and the date we read it; the full list is on our updates page. Where those bodies say a thing is unproven, our page says so too, including where that is inconvenient for a product on it.

Reviews

Customer quotes on this site are real reviews of the frames shown, printed as their writers typed them, spelling included. The ones we choose tend to name a drawback: a lens that popped out, a mirror that fades unevenly, a frame that ran small. A quote that promises more for a lens than its rating says is left out.

Photographs

Every card shows the pack shot of the exact colourway named on it, not a neighbouring colour from the same family. Frames with slogans printed into the picture do not run here.

A wrong figure or sentence, with the page, to shade@bealer.org. We fix it and note the change on the updates page.
