02What decides it

A clear round frame for a day at a monitor

The BL9001 round TR90 frame with a clear lens the brand rates for blue light, in flesh pink, shiny black and crystal, for a desk rather than a beach.

This is the one shelf where the honest page and the sales page part ways, so here is the honest one first. The lens has a coating that reflects part of the blue band of visible light, and that is the property we print on the card. What that coating does for you is a separate question, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology has answered it: the blue light from a screen has never been shown to harm an eye, and blue-light glasses are not necessary. The tired, dry feeling at five o'clock comes from blinking about half as often at a screen, and the academy's fix is to look up and away from it, not to put a coating in front of it.

So what is this frame for? A frame. A light, round, 51 mm frame with a 145 mm arm that sits on your face all day without pressing, in a clear lens you can wear indoors, with a coating that takes a little of the sharpness off a bright white page. People who like the look of glasses and do not need correction buy it for that, and one reviewer who tried it over her prescription pair found it too heavy for the bridge of her nose and said so. It is $9.99 in three finishes, and it is sold as what it is.

What the coating does, and what it does not

The lens in our screen glasses carries a coating the brand rates as filtering part of the blue band of visible light, and that is the property we print. What that coating does for you is a separate question, and on it the American Academy of Ophthalmology is direct: the small amount of blue light coming from a screen has never been shown to harm the eye, the evidence shows no meaningful link between blue light and damage to the retina, and blue-light glasses are not necessary. The tired, dry feeling after a long day at a monitor is real and the academy attributes it to blinking about half as often at a screen, not to the colour of the light. These frames are sold as a clear-lens frame with a coating; they are not a treatment for eye strain, headaches or sleep, and we do not say they are.

Every sentence in this note about the eye comes from a named public source. All of them, with the date we read them, are on our updates page.

BEALER screen glasses: questions

The three things people ask us about screen glasses before they choose a pair.

Are BEALER blue light glasses a fix for your eye strain or headaches?

We do not say they do, and the academy of ophthalmology says blue-light glasses are not necessary: the light from a screen has never been shown to harm an eye, and the strain after a long day comes from blinking half as often, which a coating does not change. The lens carries a coating the brand rates for the blue band; that is the property on the card, and it is the whole of the claim.

Can you wear BEALER screen glasses over prescription glasses?

Better not to. One reviewer tried, found the pair too heavy for the bridge of her nose and said it left marks. The frame is a 138 mm round with an 18 mm bridge, built to sit on a face by itself; if you need correction, a coated prescription lens from your optician is the honest route.

Will a BEALER screen frame fit you the way the sunglasses do?

No: it is the softest fit on the site. A 51 mm lens in a 138 mm round frame with a 145 mm arm, the longest arm in the range, so it rests behind the ear rather than gripping. It weighs about 130 grams boxed and much less on the face, and it is the frame here made to be forgotten for eight hours.
