01For the road at four in the afternoon · 13 cards
The lenses on the men's wrap and the women's rectangle that warm the view and lift contrast: brown, gradient brown and orange, all polarized against the glare off a wet road.
All 12 on the men's sport wraps shelfAll 11 on the women's rectangles shelf
The glare that tires a driver comes off the road, the bonnet in front and the windscreen of the car ahead, and all of it arrives lined up in one plane, which is what a polarizing film stops. The lenses gathered here add a second thing to that: a warm tint. Brown and gradient brown lift the contrast of a grey road and make the edge of a lane easier to hold; orange goes further and is the lens for the flat, overcast afternoon when the road has no contrast in it at all. On the women's rectangle the gradient is darker at the top of the 42 mm lens, where the sky is, and lighter at the bottom, where the dashboard is.
Two cautions come straight from the ophthalmologists and belong on a page with this name. A polarized lens can make an LCD dashboard, a phone on a mount or a cash machine hard to read at certain angles, because a screen emits polarized light too. And it is the wrong lens for driving at night, when you need every bit of light there is; the academy says a polarized lens after dark may do more harm than good. So these are daytime lenses, from $9.99 for a gradient brown rectangle to $19.99 for a wrap two-pack with an orange in it, and the case in the box is for the drive home after sunset.
UV400 on a lens means the lens is rated to stop ultraviolet light up to a wavelength of 400 nanometres, which covers UVA and UVB, the two bands that reach the ground. That rating is the whole of what a sunglass lens does about the sun; polarization is a separate property that cuts reflected glare and, in the words of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, provides no UV protection on its own. The academy also says a darker lens is not a safer lens and that the sun's rays pass through haze and cloud, so the number to read on any pair, ours included, is the UV rating rather than the tint. A pair of sunglasses is not treatment for any eye condition, and light sensitivity that arrived suddenly is a question for an optometrist or ophthalmologist, not for a lens.

03Asked before ordering
What people ask us about driving sunglasses before they pick a pair.
Usually, but not at every angle: an LCD screen emits polarized light, and at the wrong angle a polarized lens darkens it. Tilt your head and the display comes back. That is the same effect that lets you test the lens against a phone, and the academy lists it as the main drawback of the film.
No, and not in any polarized lens. The film removes part of the light, and at night you need all of it; the academy of ophthalmology says polarized lenses after dark may do more harm than good. The pouch in every box is for that drive.
