Stand at the edge of a lake at noon and the surface is a sheet of white, and whatever is under it is gone. That sheet is light bounced off a flat surface, lined up in one plane, and a polarizing film is a grid tuned to stop exactly that plane; the ophthalmologists list fishing and boating first among the places a polarized lens earns its keep.
